Resumo

RESUMO

A doen�a periodontal (DP) consiste em uma infec��o cr�nica, de alta preval�ncia, que atinge os tecidos de sustenta��o e prote��o dos dentes. Relaciona-se com fatores sist�micos espec�ficos, a exemplo das doen�as cardiovasculares, parto prematuro, diabetes e disfun��o er�til (DE). A disfun��o er�til � um dist�rbio de etiologia multifatorial e consiste na impossibilidade de manter ou obter uma ere��o. O objetivo do presente artigo foi discutir aspectos que relacionam a doen�a periodontal e a disfun��o er�til e apresentar estudos que possam corroborar com esta associa��o. A poss�vel rela��o entre elas existe devido ao comprometimento da fun��o endotelial. A progress�o da DP leva a um aumento da express�o de diversos fatores de crescimento e citocinas que influenciam na fun��o endotelial, participando tamb�m do processo de forma��o de ateromas e influenciando na s�ntese de �xido n�trico, um dos mediadores da ere��o. Al�m disso, as altera��es causadas pela DP a n�vel de m�sculo liso e c�lulas endoteliais podem levar a aterosclerose, que � vista inicialmente nos vasos menos calibrosos, a exemplo dos vasos do p�nis. Considera-se ao final da revis�o que existem fortes ind�cios que apontam para esta efetiva rela��o, mas novos estudos cl�nicos ainda s�o necess�rios para torn�-la uma evid�ncia.
