Abstract
Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant hereditary condition. It is rare, neurodegenerative, and it affects from 5 to 10 per 100,000 individuals. It directly affects chromosome 4 by leading to its mutation. The patient presents progressive dementia, as well as involuntary, repetitive and random movements, and it hinders the performance of dental procedures. The aim of the current study is to address, through a case report, the management, the professional adaptation and the dental surgery intervention performed in tooth 48 of a patient diagnosed with Huntington's disease. The intervention was carried out at the Dental Clinic for Special Patients (COPE - Clínica de Odontologia para Pacientes Especiais) of Catholic University of Brasília (UCB - Universidade Católica de Brasília). The tooth presented extensive carious lesions with painful symptoms and it had no function. Clinical activities were planned and performed at 4 and 6 hands. The professional adaptation in the use of auxiliary and facilitator means, as well as the patients participatory and psychological conditioning contributed to the performance of this clinical activity. The use of specific anesthetic technique, odontosection, drug prescription, as well as the patients cooperation and trust were paramount. The suture was removed after 13 days and the patient is still in treatment at COPE. It is concluded that the dentist must be well prepared when it comes to the accommodation, handling time, patience, professional involvement, clinical interest and the motivation to perform this humanized clinical procedure, which allowed eliminating the pain and improving the patients quality of life, as it was reported.
